Unfortunately, the root password specified in the archive (centos5INFO) does not work.

I also could not figure out the password, but when you get to the grub prompt, hit a key and edit the options passed to the kernel. Add " single" to that line, and continue to boot. Once you are at the command-prompt, then change the root password with "p

oh, and /etc/sysconfig/clock should be set to UTC=no for proper host-client synchronization.

the password is actually
centos5
the INFO bit is the header for the next section of text.
